Ice Cream Sammich

I've never understood why the wafers on ice cream sandwiches invariably have holes. But if they must have holes, why not grommets?

Wondering about those two "extra" grommets at the center of each end of the wafer? For some reason Good Humor puts holes in those spots (it's consistent across all of their ice cream sandwiches), so I had to put grommets there, even though they seem to ruin the visual pattern.

Life Savers

Life Savers have been marketed for over a century as "the candy with the hole." Not bad, but I think they could do better: the candy with the grommet.

Part of Your Good Breakfast

I've been eating Cheerios for breakfast pretty much every morning since I was 10 years old. I like how simple and elemental they are — but that's not to say that they can't be improved upon.

Pomegrommet

(My thanks to Bruce Broderson, who was the first to suggest this one.)

Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum

I hadn't opened a pack of Wrigley's Spearmint in many years and was surprised to find that it's now green instead of off-white. When did that happen? Also, it seems odd that the packaging shows a double-pointed arrow — that visual device had always been reserved for Doublemint gum, while Wrigley's Spearmint always had a single-pointed arrow. Not sure when this changed, but I find it strangely upsetting, as if one of the universe's eternal verities has been upended.

(Special thanks to Mary Bakija for suggesting this one.)

Citrus

I'm not sure when the folks at Tropicana began promoting their orange juice by depicting an orange with a straw, but I've always thought the orange would look better with a grommet, so I gave it one. Turns out the entire citrus family is very grommet-friendly.

A Visit to the Deli Counter

Incidentally, one of the pleasures of this project is getting to punch little holes in things and ending up with tiny little core samples as a result. In this case, you can see little fragments of olive in the olive loaf divots:

And So It Begins

It all started when I had a home improvement project that entailed installing a few grommets into something. That got me thinking: What else could I install grommets into? A quick look in my pantry provided the answer.
